Who would ever have thought that Jessica Rabbit and Betty Boop would meet, and create a rock n’ roll frenzy of sugar sweet harmonies and rawkus rockin’ rhythm? Meet ‘The Obscuritones’!
The Obscuritones met in February 2009, in London (UK). After several internet scouring, and ever growing greaser 50’s quiffs; they stamped their slick original seal to create a unique sound comprised of their own ‘obscuri-tone’ tracks intertwined with acoustic and electric best-known songs from the 50s (such as...Johnny Burnette Trio, Collins Kids, Link Wray among others). They enrich the old-with-the-new, producing their very own twist of 50’s female vocal harmony, surfin’ spy and garage rock from the 60s.
Each band member brings forth their own, together holding a cocktail of musical influences including: East Bay Ray, Bob Armstrong, Steve Albini, 50’s 60’s and 70s Rock’n’Roll, Punk, Ska, Folk, Jazz and Swing. Their current line up is made up of two sparkling lead ladies, Joey and Gabs, joined by four other feral musicians, upright bass (Andy), frantic drumming (Phil) and twangy rockabilly/surf guitarists (Hugh and Sam).
They are quite simply a bunch of charming, remarkably driven, witty, talented, old-made-new, tight, rhythmic rockin’ souls.
The Obscuritones have sustained a consistently high demand of gigs across the UK from humble corrugated iron barns in the Suffolk country side, sailing down the river Thames to perhaps more commonly playing at an extensive range of both small and large venues and festivals all around London. More recently (Sept 2011) they toured around Belgium, Holland and France. Their trip to France will lead to a release of a vinyl single 45 RPM in March 2012 by Steve Rydell Records as part of the first volume of the ‘Rockabilly Queens’ series.
Once you have seen them live it’s easy to see why they are in such high demand; every performance is a fun filled, high energy experience whether in a small bar or large open air stages; these boys n gals sure know how to jump, wiggle, shake, growl and prowl, please and tease!!
